Burning Man is an experimental art festival in the middle of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. It's a weird place that stretches the boundaries of what I consider a festival. There is no official organizer and it doesn’t have a main stage where well-known acts are performing. Everything is organized by its 60,000 participants, the Burners.
We were initially fascinated because of the so-called gift economy at Burning Man. Nothing is for sale at the festival, but people give each other things without getting anything in return. Literally everything can be a gift: from food an drinks to jewellery or even foot massages.
On our way to the festival, we drove through the Canadian Rocky Mountains, through Vancouver Island and along the United States westcoast to San Francisco. It was a very beautiful trip and I documented everything on video. Together with Coen Stout, I made it into a travel documentary series. It consists out of eight episodes, of which six are finished to date.
